The subject of the Singaporean male is one that is as endlessly fascinating as it is touchy. Whether Singaporean men as a species are as interesting as fast food restaurant condiments is, of course, a debate for another day. But certainly women in Singapore will always be talking about men in Singapore. As part of the forum, members of the public were asked, via a social media poll, to describe their impression of Singaporean men in one or two words.
I found myself gaping open-mouthed at the screen as these words were flashed across it.

People say that when you finally meet your soulmate, there are no butterflies or earth-shattering revelations. But to meet someone at all first requires us to put ourselves out there. Yet matchmaking has always fascinated me, because it involves creating specific circumstances to conjure magic and usher in love. While many feel that this renders the experience less authentic, I find it interesting to assume we can control chemistry and destiny. When we share our preferences for our dates, we are essentially placing our heart in the hands of our matchmakers for one unguarded moment, in hopes that they will read us well enough to match us with that special someone to end our search.

An account by a year-old Chinese man. Being a young adult subjects you to inappropriate questioning about your relationship status in the workplace. It became known that I had been single for a while, four years to be exact. A friend at work casually brought up the topic of setting me up on a blind date during lunch.
He asked if I had dated anyone outside my race. I said no and immediately knew he was setting me up with a non-Chinese girl. So when I was asked about the blind date again, I agreed. He took the blind aspect of the date very seriously. I was given a fake name of the girl, which I later found out to be the name of his domestic helper. Our blind date was set up on a Friday.
We would go to a location determined by my friend with no points of contact except through him. It was an uneasy situation but I trusted him. When the day rolled around, I dressed a little better than usual by putting a neatly pressed blue shirt over my usual T-shirt-and-jeans get-up.

Dating is a stage of romantic relationships in humans whereby two people meet socially with the aim of each assessing the other’s suitability as a prospective partner in an intimate relationship. It is a form of courtship , consisting of social activities done by the couple, either alone or with others. The protocols and practices of dating, and the terms used to describe it, vary considerably from country to country and over time.
While the term has several meanings, the most frequent usage refers to two people exploring whether they are romantically or sexually compatible by participating in dates with the other. With the use of modern technology, people can date via telephone or computer or just meet in person. When Wu Manjin told her parents in that she wanted to marry a man in Shibadong village, in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture, Hunan province – about 10 kilometres from her village – she was refused because her mother who was raised there still has a deep memory about its poverty. Due to the mountainous landform, each villager in Shibadong has an average of just square metres of arable land, only enough to feed themselves. Long Xiulin, former leader of the poverty alleviation team in the village, said when he first arrived there in , he realised that the main problem was the negative population growth.
He said that the first year he was there, 12 older adults died while just two babies were born. The majority of the young people went to cities seeking jobs and settled there, making it harder for the villagers to increase their income as a whole. No women would like to marry here. It is how Wu, then 35, met Long Xianlan, a then year-old villager, during a blind date in in Shibadong.
Wu said that she signed up for the blind date just for fun without telling her parents. About 30 men and 10 women took part in the blind date and “the competition was fierce”. I fell in love with him at first sight and decided to date him,” Wu said. However, Wu’s family members were all against the relationship because after Long Xianlan’s father died from disease years ago, his mother remarried, leaving him alone in a worn, wooden house. He drank excessively and didn’t have a stable income.
In , Long Xiulin, the team leader, secured a 50, yuan loan for Long Xianlan to maintain beehives.

With the prospect of going out on dates scuppered due to the circuit breaker measures, Mr Kishen Ravindaran was happy to turn to video conferencing and have his first virtual date last month. Since the Covid outbreak, many dating agencies have had to arrange virtual dates in place of outings to cafes or restaurants. Singles are warming up to the idea as well.
Popular United States-based mobile dating app Bumble, for instance, saw a 56 per cent increase in video calls from March to last month among its users from around the world. Home-grown Kopi Date and Lunch Actually are among the dating agencies that have turned to virtual dating. Kopi Date, founded in July last year, is tapping video-conferencing platform Whereby, which allows custom branding within the chatroom so that the dating agency’s video dates are held in a Kopi Date-themed chat window.
Kopi Dates co-founder Lee Jing Lin says: “We spent quite some time trying out multiple video-call programs in search of a platform that could come as close to our signature Kopi Date experience as possible, before finally deciding on one because of its user-friendly, yet beautifully minimalist interface. She adds that there has been no decline in sign-ups due to the Covid outbreak as the agency has been accepting sign-ups for offline dates in advance. As for Kopi Date’s starter kit, it is a physical pack sent to participants after they have been matched with their dates.
The kit includes interesting facts about the other person; ice-breaker suggestions; technical tips about having a working microphone, camera, lighting and Wi-Fi; and a drip coffee or tea pack. Kopi Date had plans for a mass Valentine’s Day date for its clients in February, but shelved them for a virtual event due to government advisories against mass gatherings. Singapore’s circuit breaker period began on April 7. It was to last till May 5, but has been extended to June 1. Meet-ups are not allowed even after June 1.
