The lower priced Fender guitars were made in America and could not compete with the lower prices of Japanese made Fender copies.
In the early s, Japanese labor and production costs were much lower than in America and to compete with the Japanese made guitars, Fender moved the lower priced Fender guitar production from America to Japan. Fender began negotiations with several Japanese musical instrument distributors and reached an agreement with Yamano Gakki and Kanda Shokai to establish Fender Japan. Yamano Gakki are also known for once being part of Epiphone Japan.
Kanda Shokai own the Greco brand name and one of the conditions of the Fender Japan agreement was that Kanda Shokai cease production of its own Greco Fender copies. This arrangement benefited Fender because it removed the Greco Fender copies from the Japanese market which were selling in Japan at much lower prices than the American made Fenders and it also benefited Kanda Shokai because Kanda Shokai could then distribute Japanese made Fender branded guitars in Japan.
Further negotiations between Fender and Japanese guitar factories were done. Tokai was seriously considered to start building the first Japanese made Fenders but after a breakdown in negotiations, FujiGen Gakki was chosen instead .

In the early eighties when Fender went looking for an offshore manufacturer to make Fender licensed guitars they settled on a Japanese manufacturer who was making equal, or even better instruments than Fender was making in the US. This factory was making most Fender models with such precision and quality that Fender was shocked at how good they were. So, in a deal was struck and Fender Japan officially established the first official Fender guitars not made in the USA. The first series to hit the market were the JV Japanese Vintage Fender guitars and were built from the original blueprints supplied by Fender and made in the Fujigen and Mastumoku factories by the people who had been making the Greco Fender copies.
Due to demand for these new models overseas FJ decided to make a Squier series of guitars for export that would run side by side with the JV Fender series. The early ’80s ‘JV Series’ Squier Strats were undeniably amazing value for money, representing as they did the premium Fender Japan product in Europe, at a budget price. But not all JV Strats were created equal, and in my experience their appeal fluctuated quite markedly.

Fender JV serial ’72 Strat, made in Japan , frosted white. Holy heck, this is quite something! If you’re not familiar with the legend around Fender JV instruments, it goes something like this: Fender USA’s quality has suffered dramatically following the CBS takeover in , and by the late 70s, it was very hit and miss. Under the management of Dan Smith, Fender started a joint-venture in Japan in to manufacture their own guitars there, partially to combat the startlingly high-quality copies coming out of Japan by the likes of Greco and Yamaha, and partially to take some pressure off their USA manufacturing reorganisation.
The first instruments to roll off the line from the Fujigen factory with a Fender brand on them wore the now-famous JV serial numbers, they were made from This one dates to the middle of that period; the pots are dated Many of the JV Strats were Squier branded and destined for the export market, the Fender branded examples like this were largely sold within Japan and gifted with high quality USA electronics; they are more collectable.
This ’72 style model sporting the now-popular big CBS-era headstock is also considerably more scarce than the ’62 or ’57 Strats from the same catalog.
