When I was in my second year of university, a stranger approached a friend and me on the streets of Melbourne, asking to photograph us for his website about interracial couples. A little taken aback, we told him we weren’t together but had friends that might fit the bill. I always knew that, as an Asian American man growing up in the United States, I wasn’t as desirable or “American” as my peers. As a kid, I never saw Asian men dating outside of our race, or with white women especially. Non-Asian women felt inaccessible, fueling a preexisting feeling of invisibility — one driven by micro-aggressions, a lack of representation and, ultimately, stereotypes that painted us as passive, emasculated boys lacking sex appeal and a voice.
When I think of what it means to be “all-American,” I imagine a prototypical white male — physically well-built, outgoing, charismatic, liked by everyone. This traditionally masculine person represents the ideal man reinforced by what we see on TV, in movies and across the broader mainstream. Asian American men, however, have never fit this mold.
Unlike Asian American women, who have long been fetishized in the West, we have been desexualized ever since the first Chinese communities immigrated to the US. As a way of minimizing the threat posed by Chinese men — who were often portrayed as stealing white Americans’ jobs and women — Asians were characterized as passive, effeminate and weak. These stereotypes were further promoted in movies, where white actors like Mickey Rooney Mr. Yunioshi in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and Warner Oland who played both Fu Manchu and the fictional detective Charlie Chan , used thick, stunted accents and exaggerated mannerisms to reinforce existing stereotypes, ridiculing or villainizing Asian men as a form of entertainment.

Love is in the air! February 14th for some, is a day to look forward to, and for some, it is a day to dread. A day to make the person you love feel a little extra bit special and valued. Especially in many Western countries, it’s a big day for a lot of people, even for those who are single or not romantically interested in anyone, as it also presents itself as a day to go out dressed nicely with friends. Although some argue that Valentine’s Day is too commercialized now, I personally believe it is about what you make of the day.

In most of Japan, winter is pretty mild, but consistently cold.

Marriage in Japan is a legal and social institution at the center of the household. The archetypal Japanese man works 6 days a week for long hours. Children usually start dating around the age of 15 but only get married at an average age.
And people will say the number-one reason is economic insecurity. This may seem surprising in Japan, a country where the economy is currently humming along, and the unemployment rate is below 3 percent. But the shrinking economic opportunities stem from a larger trend that is global in nature: the rise of unsteady employment. Such temporary workers are counted as employed in government statistics. Only about 20 percent of irregular workers are able to switch over to regular jobs at some point in their careers.
Then, as globalization put more pressure on companies to cut costs, they increasingly relied on a temporary workforce, a trend that intensified during the Great Recession. In a culture that places such an emphasis on men being breadwinners, this has serious implications for marriage and childbearing. About 30 percent of irregular workers in their early 30s are married, compared to 56 percent of full-time corporate employees, according to Kingston.
Women seeking full-time work frequently find themselves in irregular jobs too, which also has implications for raising a family, since the hours are unpredictable and the pay is low.
